Irakli Garibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia, addresses the general debate of the 78th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 19 - 26 September 2023). -------- Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili called on the international community “to persuade the Russian Federation to engage with the Geneva International Discussions and fully implement the EU mediated 2008 Ceasefire Agreement.” Addressing the General Assembly today (22 Sep), Garibashvili said, “As you are aware, my country experienced a full-scale military aggression in 2008 and continues to endure its destructive consequences.” He added, “this is still evident in the occupation of 20 percent of Georgian territory by the Russian Federation and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people from their homes.” The Prime Minister continued, “I confidently state that despite the devastation we’ve endured, we have not hesitated to pursue our ambitions, we have transformed Georgia into a dynamic society.” Garibashvili stressed, “Georgia understands the cost of war and recognizes the value of peace. Since 2012, our Government has built and maintained an uninterrupted decade of peace and stability.” He also said, “I would like to take this opportunity to express our deep appreciation to the international community for the unwavering support in upholding Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.” --------- The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote. The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter. The UN has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world. But one thing has stayed the same: it remains the one place on Earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity.
