Beethoven - Sonata for Violin and Piano, No 9 in A major, Kreutzer Sonata, Op 47 I Adagio sostenuto – Presto II Andante con variazioni III Presto Mr Leung Kin-fung, Violin Dr Cheng Wai, Piano Beethoven wrote his most famous and virtuosic sonata for violin and piano not for domestic music-making, but for public performance. It was written for the half-African violinist George Polgreen Bridgetower(1780-1860), who visited Vienna while on a concert tour in Europe. Beethoven was introduced to the young virtuoso and was sufficiently impressed to compose a piece hastily for their concert performance on 24 May 1803. The violin part was finished just in time, but the piano part had only a sketchy outline, for which Beethoven compensated with his remarkable improvisatory skills. It was a success, but after a quarrel with Bridgetower the dedication was transferred to another esteemed violinist, Rodolphe Kreutzer(1766-1831), when the sonata was published in 1805. It is the only sonata for violin and piano by Beethoven with a slow introduction, begun by the violin alone in A major as a noble prologue to the Presto in minor mode, with the violin often playing multiple stopping - more than one string at a time - vying with the piano in bravura.
