Packed bumps in Vertigo DESCRIPTION: Whale's Tail is an iconic bowl area located in Peak 7 Alpine at Breckenridge ski resort. According to a Summit Daily Article about how the runs on Peak 7 and 8 originally got their names, "The origin of the Whale’s Tail area is less clear. The whole area beneath the ridge between Peaks 8 and 7 was originally called the White Whale, but in late spring, the pattern of the melting snow and surrounding rock areas resembles a true whale’s tail. So, the backcountry ski group came to call the area exactly that — Whale’s Tail" (link: https://www.summitdaily.com/news/the-.... Confusingly enough, even though it's on Peak 7, a traverse from the top of the Imperial Superchair on Peak 8 is the only way to access this massive bowl. The sides of the bowl are steeper than the middle of the bowl, however, the cornice is the largest in the middle of the bowl (this is Whale's Tail proper). This is exactly where I dropped in. The best thing that I can say about Whale's Tail is that its pitch is beautiful. The cornice drop-in is by far the most intense part of the run because, after that, it's just a really wide-open and awesome bowl run all the way down to Vertigo. The best adjective I can use to describe Whale's Tail is "epic". After the Whale's Tail bowl section, I filtered into Vertigo a short high alpine mogul chute. Also according to the Summit Daily Article, "Mueller found a sweet spot farther out on Peak 7 that came to be called Vertigo (upper and lower). Many times, when the group traversed out into that area, wind and blowing snow created total whiteout conditions and feelings of disorientation and, well, vertigo. But you always knew when you came to Vertigo — gentle slopes on either side of a shallow chute. Once you felt the chute, you just pointed your skis downhill, said your “Hail Mary” and shot downward, floating back and forth between the gentle sides" (link: https://www.summitdaily.com/news/the-.... Vertigo had slightly worse snow conditions than Whale's Tail due to its lower elevation, but it was still plenty of fun to ski. After finishing Vertigo, I followed Forget Me Not / Lower Forget Me Not all the way back to the top terminals of the Freedom Superchair and Independence Superchair, as well as the Pioneer Crossing Restaurant. Overall, I really liked skiing Whale's Tail. It was such a crime that in my 2 trips to Breckenridge, I never skied the Peak 7 alpine. I'm really glad I was able to finally check it out this trip. Whale's Tail in my opinion is one of the best introductions to this area! Next time I come here, I'd love to check out the other alpine runs in this Peak 7 Bowl Area with hopefully bluebird conditions (Maybe CJ's?).
