Amelia Sie, violin Assisted by Kevin Devine, harpsichord, and Nathan Whittaker, cello Presented as part of Early Music America's 2024 Emerging Artists Showcase during the 2042 EMA Summit in Cleveland. Program: I'm Picking Up Good Vibrations 00:00 - 'Suite for Scordatura Violin' II. Allemande III. Courante IV. Sarabande Thomas Baltzar (1630-1663) 4:55 - Rosary Sonata No. 5, 'The Finding of Jesus in the Temple' Heinrich I.F. von Biber (1644-1704) 14:05 - Waffles n' Grimm - world premiere Jimmy Drancsak (b. 1997) 18:34 - Partita No. 5 from 'Artificiosus Concentus pro Camera a Violin Solo' Johann Joseph Vilsmayr (1663 – 1722) 25:15 - Kennet's Dream James Oswald (1710–1769) Artist notes: This program explores the use of cross-tuning, or scordatura, in violin repertoire. While classical musicians in the present day consider the tuning of “G-D-A-E” as the standard, there are many examples of cross-tuning in Baroque music and is considered only one of many possible tunings in fiddle music, where it is called “Italian tuning.” This program explores the use of G-D-A-D tuning (Gee-DAD) and A-E-A-C# tuning (Nackastamning/Drunken Hiccups) in both classical and fiddle music, and how these composers understood the effect of tuning on overtones, resonance, and musical impact. A huge thank you to Kevin Devine and Nathan Whittaker for collaborating on this performance, Jimmy Drancsak for composing a tune for tonight's program, and Carolyn Foulkes for graciously lending me a beautiful instrument to perform on.
