Although the front line was calm on Tuesday, Alliance officers said they were waiting for the end of the U-S offensive before starting fresh attacks. VOICEOVER: 0.03 After years of fighting against Taliban forces these troops hope to turn the tide of the war in their favour, with the help of the United States. 0.12 In this poor country there is little money for new guns. Many of the weapons used by the Northern Alliance are left over from the days of Soviet occupation. Their forces, based in Northern Afghanistan, are also seriously outnumbered. 0.24 It's estimated about 10-thousand men are fighting with the Northern Alliance. The hardline Taliban has about three times that number. 0.34 Still, their determined efforts are to revenge the death of their late leader, Ahmed Shah Massoud, who was assassinated by Taliban suicide bombers. 0.42 While they control just 5 per cent of Afghan territory, they're optimistic US airstrikes will help them gain precious ground. 0.50 Monday's strike in Kandahar would have been difficult for the rebel alliance to carry out. Kandahar's location in the south of Afghanistan, is far from any airstrips belonging to the alliance. 1.03 UPSOUND: Radio 1.06 Small hand-held radios are often the only form of contact with the outside world for these villagers. Here, they wait and try to follow news of the attacks. The Ayar family is the wealthiest in the village. 1.18 UPSOUND - (Farsi) Hashim Ayar 1.22 I'm very glad the American bombing has started, one brother says, and I hope it takes the Taliban and the terrorists off the face of the earth. 1.31 After 20 years of war the villagers here are only interested in peace.
