In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Konrad Kording, Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, whose work sits at the intersection of neuroscience, machine learning, and data science. We talk about how modern AI tools, like deep learning and causal reasoning, are used to study the brain and other biological systems. Konrad explains what deep learning actually is, where neural networks resemble the brain (and where they don’t), and why understanding causality is one of the hardest problems in both neuroscience and AI. We also discuss Konrad’s career path from physics to neuroscience, the ambitious goal of simulating entire nervous systems, and why studying simpler organisms can teach us about intelligence more broadly. A major part of the conversation focuses on Neuromatch Academy, the global online program Konrad co-founded to teach neuroscience and machine learning at scale. He shares why democratizing education matters, how Neuromatch works, and what skills students need to succeed in this field today. Finally, Konrad introduces PlanYourScience.com, a tool designed to help researchers plan better projects and collaborate more effectively. Topics covered include: • What deep learning is and how it’s used in neuroscience • Neural networks vs. real brains • Causality and why correlation isn’t enough • Simulating nervous systems and biological intelligence • Neuromatch Academy and global science education • Career advice for students interested in AI + neuroscience 00:00 Introduction and Guest Welcome 01:03 Neuroscience, AI, and Data Science 05:49 What Deep Learning Really Is 09:08 The Kording Lab’s Research Focus 11:08 Simulating Nervous Systems 17:49 Open Problems in Neuroscience 29:04 Why the Human Brain Is So Hard to Model 31:31 What Neuromatch Academy Is 33:08 How Neuromatch Works 36:17 Curriculum and Teaching Model 42:13 Skills for AI & Neuroscience Careers 44:01 The Value of Domain Expertise 46:59 Lightning Round 49:17 PlanYourScience.com 55:16 Final Thoughts ________________________ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗲 • LinkedIn: / brandonkrakowsky • Wharton AI & Analytics Initiative: https://ai-analytics.wharton.upenn.edu 𝗣𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝘀 • Interviews: • Learn the Technology: Interviews • How To Videos: • Learn the Technology: How To Videos • Spotify: https://bit.ly/47JxADO 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗠𝗲 • Instagram: / learnthetechnologywithbk • TikTok: / learnthetechnologywithbk • X (Twitter): https://x.com/LearnTechWBK • GitHub: https://github.com/learnthetechnology...
