Stainmore Railway Company S&D 200 Gala. 25/08/2025

To celebrate 200 years of The Stockton & Darlington Railway (as part of the Rail 200 celebrations), The Stainmore Railway Company held a special Gala event at Kirkby Stephen East Station with visiting steam locomotives: BR 2MT 2-6-0 No 78018 Borough Of Darlington NER J27 0-6-0 No 2392 running passenger trains along the short line. There were even Parallel departures as well. 0:00 We begin at Kirkby Stephen East station. Opened in August 1861, it was a Junction station with services coming in from Barnard's Castle in the East via the Stainmore Route, Tebay in the South West and Penrith in the North West. Closed in December 1962, it was reopened by Preservationists in 2011. 0:39 At the station we see Peckett 0-4-0ST No 2111 Lytham St Annes. Built in 1949, she spent her life working at Gas Works in Preston until the 1960s. Originally preserved at a museum in her namesake town. After stints in Buxton and at the Midland Railway Centre. She ended up at Kirkby Stephen East in 2018 after restoration. She is seen coupling to the rear of one of the trains. 1:40 Coming off shed and backing into the Station is NER J27 0-6-0 No 2392. Built in 1923 at Darlington as the last of the class, she was withdrawn in September 1967 before being purchased by NELPG and preserved at The North Yorkshire Moors Railway. 3:23 BR 2MT 2-6-0 No 78018 Borough Of Darlington is seen at Kirkby Stephen East. Built in 1953, she spent her early years based at West Auckland shed and worked over the Stainmore Route. In February 1955, she became something of a accidental film star when she was caught in a Snowdrift. Her recovery was filmed and was released as the documentary film "Snowdrift at Bleath Gill". Withdrawn in November 1966, she was rescued from Woodhams Brothers at Barry and is now based at The Great Central Railway. The train is made up of a pair of ex LNER Gresley Teaks. 3:39 Our train departs Kirkby Stephen East. The line isn't very long at a third of a mile so don't expect any fast running. Along the way, we pass under a bridge and past a Signal Box. 5:20 From the Bridge, we see BR 2MT No 78018 Borough Of Darlington pass under the bridge with Lytham St Annes on the rear. They take the line that would of joined the West Coast Mainline at Penrith. The train then runs back to the station. 8:04 For J27 No 2392, it was hooked up to The Old Gentlemen's Saloon (Visiting from the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway) and NER Clerestory No 818 (Visiting from Beamish). On the rear is Elizabeth, a diesel locomotive dating from 1962. 8:14 NER J27 0-6-0 No 2392 departs Kirkby Stephen East. Its also carrying on the front a Rail 200 disc and the Yorkshire and Union Flags. This train would run on the remains of the section joining the West Coast Mainline at Tebay 9:45 From the NER Clerestory, we see the running line veering off towards Penrith. Despite objections from the locals, the Stainmore Route would close on 1962. 10:16 Elizabeth brings the train back to Kirkby Stephen East. From the train, we enter the station where we see 78018 Borough Of Darlington. Trains departed every 15 minutes. 12:33 Several times during the event, we had Parallel running with BR 2MT 2-6-0 No 78018 Borough Of Darlington and J27 0-6-0 No 2392 depart Kirkby Stephen East at the same time. This gives videographers and photographers oppotunities to get some good shots. We see one of these runs from the bridge crossing the line to end the video.
