I travelled from Pontianak in West Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) to Surabaya in Java on one of the cheapest ferries in Indonesia — just £20 for a two-day crossing. This was part of my overland journey from Borneo all the way back to the UK without flying. Ferries from Pontianak only depart once a week, every Tuesday, so after four days in the city I finally boarded and found myself in a huge shared dorm with over 100 people, no Wi-Fi, no bar, and three basic meals a day included. I had no idea what to expect — cabin? No cabin. Shops? Maybe. Entertainment? Absolutely none. This video shows the full experience of taking the long-distance ferry between Borneo and Java: boarding in Pontianak, the sleeping arrangements, food, wandering around the ship, the people onboard, and what you actually get for £20 on a two-day Indonesian ferry journey. If you’re planning backpacking in Indonesia, travelling overland between islands, or you’re simply curious what these big Indonesian ferries are like, I hope this gives you a real look at the journey. I am an older backpacker travelling the world proving that backpacking is not just for the younger generation.
