Solyanka is originally from Russia. It came to East Germany during the Cold War and became a popular dish in there. Mr. S told me, if there is even a small piece of meat like sausage or ham in the refrigerator, it can be used to make a Solyanka. Just throw everything in a pot and cook it - you will get a delicious soup. Solyanka tastes a little sour, but well spiced. In Restaurants, you often can find it as an Appetizer. Usually, a bread roll or sliced baguette is eaten with it. Cut onion, roast meat, ham, salami and pickled gherkin into strips or dices. 2. Pour about half of water (500ml) into a small pot. When the water boils, turn to low heat and put the spices in the small pot. Continue to cook with low heat. 3. At the same time, heat a pot with about 3 liters capacity. Put onion and bacon in this pot and stir-fry briefly. After that, put ham, salami as well as tomato paste and stir-fry. Last, add in pickled gherkin, capers, lemon juice, spices water from the small pot and the remaining water into the big pot. When the water is boiling, cover the pot and turn to low heat, then simmer for 30 minutes. The meat ingredients are a bit salty, so before you turn off the stove, taste it and add salt or water according to your preference. 4.
