Aura Farming at the Garden. This maple tree fell down near the Enchilada boulder a few weeks ago, so I took the opportunity to carve a climbing hold out of it. As a bonus challenge, I tried to use mostly hand tools. This project ended up being a really nice excuse to spend some time at a place I love in new context. In the first half of the video I am working the wood while it is still "green", in this state its much easier to cave but it is not dimensionally stable. As it dries the wood will warp and potentially crack. I noticed a lot of bug damage in the wood so I decided to dry it in my food dehydrator (heated at 140F for 6 hours). I needed to do this to kill off the bugs, but drying the wood so quickly caused it to crack pretty badly. I filled the cracks with thin CA glue and sawdust. I did actually use the belt sander to clean up some of the CA glue (not included in the video). Once the wood is dry it is much harder to carve but the carved surface finish is better. I also waited until the wood dried to flatten the back. I'm very pleased with how this hold turned out and I'm excited to see how it gets used on the VRG spray wall.
