Lesson 7 - Scaling Up Project-Based Learning: Building Interdisciplinary, Real-World Classrooms

As project-based learning matures, the next step is scaling beyond a single classroom into cross-disciplinary collaboration. This video explores how interdisciplinary PBL can simulate the modern workplace by replacing isolated subjects with integrated, team-based projects. Traditional education often separates learning into silos—design, engineering, writing, and business planning—each taught independently. In the real world, however, these roles work together on shared goals. Interdisciplinary PBL recreates that environment by forming cross-functional teams where students from different areas collaborate on a single project. One effective model is to center the learning experience around a real-world product launch. Designers focus on visual identity, engineers build the technical solution, writers create documentation and messaging, and business planners develop strategy and market positioning. The project itself becomes the unifying thread across multiple courses. Scaling to this model requires careful planning. There are three key indicators that a program is ready: course topics naturally align, schedules overlap enough to allow collaboration, and students already have some experience with project-based learning. Rather than attempting a full transition immediately, many programs succeed by using a “start small” strategy. This might involve sharing a single milestone between courses or holding a joint presentation before moving toward full cross-disciplinary integration. By gradually connecting subjects and aligning projects, schools can transform isolated classrooms into collaborative environments that reflect the structure, pace, and expectations of modern workplaces.
