Driving Switzerland 🇨🇭 | Lac de Derborence 4K Scenic Drive

Today's drive we are in the beautiful Canton de Valais making our way up to Lac de Derborence (Lake Derborence). On September 23rd 1714, a geological disaster struck the pastures of Derborence. An entire section of the mountain collapsed and buried the cattle and shepherds there. The locals believed that this disaster was the work of the devil: the mountain in question was therefore nicknamed "Les Diablerets". The "cursed" valley was then largely abandoned and the second landslide 35 years later, even more important than the first, had a less important impact on the population. The giant boulders then dammed the torrent, creating the youngest natural mountain lake in Europe. Scientists agree that a total of about 50 million cubic meters of rock has detached from the mountain. The resulting landscape, a national nature reserve, is a paradise for biologists, geologists, photographers and visitors of all ages. This route links two circuits: the "Diablerets landslide tour" and the "Lac de Derborence tour". In the unspoiled forest to the west of the lake, hikers can admire monumental firs over 450 years old, chamois, marmots, lynx, or even golden eagles or bearded vultures. Families will prefer to ride on one of the two circuits rather than the full tour. Each of them has a specific booklet (free download) with activities for children. A cozy mountain restaurant is located near the two trails, offering a beautiful terrace for resting and a play area for children. The climb to Derborence is a real adventure in itself. The only access is a narrow and winding road along the Lizerne gorges.
