In a residential area in the historic city of Bruges, Belgium, we find this beautiful combination of living and working. The clients, both doctors employed in a nearby hospital, dreamed of a new home with space for their medical practice at home. After looking around, they found the ideal location on a plot that originally had two parcels, including an old house. CAS Architects did the rest. Firstly, they gratefully embraced the location: a place adorned with old oaks and beech trees. Pieter-Jan Leenknecht: They contribute to the project's perception. We chose an intimate architecture with brick and glass, which fits perfectly into the surroundings. For us, this is always a starting point. The fact that the client, very interested in both architecture and design, shared our vision undoubtedly contributed to the success of this project. On the facade, with a somewhat closed appearance, the visitor is invited by a somewhat hidden window near the waiting room of the practice. The actual front door, leading to the private part of the house, is situated a little further away to avoid misunderstandings. CAS architects took care to clear the separation, both acoustically and visually, between the practice and the private through duplicated walls. Logically, the practice and the garage are located at the front, while all living rooms face the garden and the pool next to the completely open rear. The kitchen took on a prominent role. A charming patio with a window that captures the morning sun directly above the stove adds an extra sensation, as does the integrated covered terrace near the dining area. The pool water, visible from every corner of the house, offers calm as well as beautiful reflections. On the upper floor, a smaller volume that follows the L-shape of the ground floor houses the night area. Two children's rooms and a guest room at the front of the building are separated from the rest by a long corridor. At the end of it, there is a toilet and a shared children's bathroom. The master bedroom with its private bathroom faces the garden, while the elongated dressing room extends along the rear facade. Both the interior and exterior are timeless. The long Kolumba Petersen facing brick integrates the house very well into the environment. The use of glass and aluminum makes the structure of the house stand out for its minimalism and easy maintenance. The materials used, such as Ceppo di gre tiles found on the terrace and along the rear facade, along with a lot of wood, ensure that the line between the interior and exterior is insignificant. With this project, CAS Architects designed a house that will easily stand the test of time and at the same time make it an ideal combination of living and working. "Every architect sets the goal of satisfying their client, and that certainly happened here. I think every design is intertwined with its surroundings. Elsewhere, this might be too fragile or too dominant, but here it fits perfectly."
