Local card shops report break ins as trading card values increase

Trading card stores are increasingly becoming targets for thieves as the value of collectible cards continues to climb, prompting shop owners to invest more in security to prevent break-ins. Metro reports overall property theft is down more than 10% compared to this time last year, but trading card stores say they're seeing a spike in crime. Store employees say the surge in card values since the pandemic has made shops that sell sports and trading cards attractive not only to collectors but also to criminals. “Over the last five years or so, since the pandemic, card values have gone up exponentially,” said manager Johnny Hansen, who has worked at Legacy Sports Cards for 17 years.
