Nature and Life Episode 122. Tailorbird and Sunbird. By Prokriti O Jibon Foundation. Traditionally the mornings, in Bangladesh, are filled with melodious birds' song. This melody spread with the rising sun. Various species of birds gather in different trees in search of food. Most of these Passerine birds are familiar to us. Human territories become livelier with the song of Tailorbird and Sunbird together with other birds. 3 species of Tailorbird are found in Bangladesh. They are: Dark-necked Tailorbird, Mountain Tailorbird and Common Tailorbird. Though the male and female of this small arboreal bird look alike, they are different in size. They move here and there jumping on leaves and branches and spread their sweet melodies. Tailorbirds wander in evergreen forest, bushes, small trees of human's house yards and even large trees of hills. Common Tailorbird is the most common species of Tailorbird found in our country. It's a very tiny grey-green colored bird. So they easily camouflage themselves behind leaves. But their loud call suggests their presence. They look for food jumping alone or in couple and hunt small insects or larva with their sharp beak. They can be easily recognized for their long tail. They often make their surrounding enchanting by shaking their raised tail and calling loudly. They have amusing red radiance on their forehead and on the front side of their head. Typically June to August is their breeding time. During this time they join couple of hanging leaves together to build their nest and lay eggs there. They put some hay and grass to make the nest comfortable. The eggs hatch within 14-15 days. Young Tailorbirds grow under their parents care. Sunbird is another small passerine bird. The touch of red, yellow and violet in their body color make nature more colorful. Beside wild Sunbird, there are some species of Sunbird that roam in bushes of human house yard. Ruby-cheeked Sunbird, Purple-rumped Sunbird, Purple Sunbird, Purple-throated Sunbird and Crimson Sunbird are most common among the 9 species of Sunbird available in Bangladesh. Sunbirds mainly feed on honey but sometimes they feed on small insects as well. Long curved beak is their unique physical trait. They collect flower honey with this beak. Male and female of them have got different look. Compared to female, male Sunbirds have brighter color. Famous male Purple Sunbirds are bright bluish-purple colored and females are olive-brown colored. They spend their busy time in collecting honey from flowers. June to August is their breeding time. During this time male and female Sunbird build their nest on branches with hay, shrubs, grass etc. and lay 1-3 eggs. Male bird helps in providing the newborns with food. Though they usually feed on fruits and honey but for extra nutrition they provide their newborns with insects as well. Purple-rumped Sunbird is the most common among Sunbirds found in human habitations. Crimson Sunbird is one of the most beautiful birds found in Bangladesh. Their males have blackish-red colored back and deep red colored chest. Purple-throated Sunbirds are also very attractive. Though male birds look black from distant but their shiny blue color becomes prominent under the sunlight. Purple feathers under their throat are simply noticeable. Female birds are grey-olive colored. They roam from trees to trees in group and collect honey. When done with feeding, they rest under the shade of leaves. These birds are helping in making a green universe through pollination and at the same time maintaining environmental balance by feeding on small insects. Moreover, their sweet call brings about life in nature. But the very existence of these birds is now in jeopardy due to deforestation, destruction of bushes, scarcity of food and overall imprudent human behavior. Loss of habitation has pushed some of their species towards the brink of extinction. Their normal and healthy lifestyle needs to be restored by ensuring their natural habitat and sufficiency of food with combined effort of mass people.
