Nature and Life - Episode 104. Song Birds. By Prokriti O Jibon Foundation. Song Birds (Passerine Birds) Our mornings start with the songs of birds. Melodious call of birds can be heard almost everywhere, throughout the country. These birds are called song birds. These calls or songs are basically the way of their communication. Birds' melodious communication sounds like songs to us. Around half of the total bird species of Bangladesh are song bird. Some of them are resident and some are migratory. However, according to scientific classification, singing only does not make them song bird. Hence melodic 'Asian Koel' doesn't belong to this group but harsh voiced 'crow' is a member of this group. A vital characteristic of these birds is the finger arrangement of their foot. The three toes directed forward and one directed backward help them to easily sit on branches and/or electric wire. For this trait they are also called Passerine Birds. The mostly found song birds of our country are: Bulbul, Drongo, Sparrow, Weaver, Oriole, Pitta, Minivet, Magpie Robin, Shama, Flower Pecker, Munia etc. Two most famous song birds are: Magpie Robin and Shama. Their sweet songs can be heard day long. They usually hunt for insects in the early morning or in low light of evening and continue their melodic songs. Mynas and Starlings are most common bird species that are found around human habitat. They are the most common and easily found birds of Bangladesh. But hill Mynas that are known as talking bird can only be found in forests. Oriole's sweet call is easily audible around village bushes. Bright yellow colored and insectivorous Orioles are widely available in this country. Two other medium sized song birds are Wagtail and Shrike. Charming Shrikes are seen be quietly waiting for prey. But long beaked and thin bodied Wagtails are quite active. They are busy with collecting food and singing throughout the day. Crow and Sparrow are famous among urban song birds. They usually stroll as flock and melodiously communicate between themselves. They are silently helping urban societies as scavenger. Weavers are mostly found in rural areas. They live as flock throughout the year and during breeding season they build nest on trees as flock. Their hanging nests are visually appealing. All species of Drongo are black colored. They have appealing Physical structure. Their sharp voice is audible from long distance. Other than this, they can mimic other birds. Bulbul are found in deciduous forests, evergreen forests, Mangrove forest, urban and rural gardens and bushes. Most of the time they stroll as small flock. Their songs can be heard when they collect food from shrubberies. Among smaller song birds Sunbird, Flowerpecker, Tailorbird and Munia are well-known. Sunbirds and Flowerpeckers collect honey from flowers. Despite their small size, they have sharp voice. They are capable of moving fast and their voice are heard even when they fly. Song birds give us a touch of nature and at the same time they play vital role in our ecosystem. Scavenger Song birds help in cleaning waste and insectivorous Song birds naturally control insects. They play direct role in pollination of various plants. However, the status of some of our Song bird species is vulnerable. Due to massive destruction of trees, shrubberies and bushes these birds are losing their habitat as well as breeding process. Consequently, we no longer hear birds' song in our barren urban areas like before. To hear birds' song, we have no alternative other than massive awareness and preserving their habitat.
