An offence is a wrongful act prohibited by law, for which a punishment is prescribed. An offence is not considered to be committed against an individual, but against society as a whole. The manner in which criminal law operates in Sri Lanka is set out in the Code of Criminal Procedure Act, No. 15 of 1979. From the moment information is first received regarding an offence… until the conclusion of the trial… and even until the completion of an appeal… the Code of Criminal Procedure Act explains how the law should be implemented. The Sri Lanka Police conduct investigations into cases with great effort and dedication. However, in some cases where there is limited direct evidence, offenders may be acquitted due to the actions of investigators.
