Digital Pro Bono sucks and everyone’s to blame. In the vast majority of cases, requesting and supplying digital pro bono work sucks. For everyone. It’s not a reasonable, sustainable or a terribly responsible model to continue using in the funding-strapped 21st century. Delivering work for the public good cannot be seen as a thing on the side, or a vanity project. Within the beyond profit space there needs to be a broader understanding of what a supplier can and should be able to achieve, and suppliers to this sector need to try a bit harder, and treat the work with the respect it’s clearly due. By being less opaque, more inclusive, and making the effort to educate and inform, designers and developers are in the auspicious position to deliver remarkable organisational change for grassroots organisations. Jonty Sharples is the Co-founder of Hactar, a product and service design agency specialising in helping grow organisations with a social conscience. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
