Nintendo’s Switch 2 came out to massive fanfare last summer, quickly selling over 10 million units. Was it the gamers? Was it the scalpers? Its hard to say, but its painfully obvious that in recent months the console has drawn very little positive attention. During the Christmas sales season of 2025, for instance, the Switch 2 sort of tanked. And it wasn’t alone, pretty much all videogame consoles had a very lackluster sales season. The worst in 30 years. For the Xbox and Playstation this kind of makes sense: AAA gaming is a waning giant, and both of those consoles are pretty old…..but the Switch 2 was brand new hardware and featured a few major titles that - on paper - that ought to have been a big deal, especially with kids! But they weren’t. Looking for explanations, everyone is focussing on the high price of Nintendo games in 2025 and 2026, and that’s a fair starting point…..but I think underneath it all, there’s a much bigger problem looming that looks like its going to cause absolute havoc on the gaming industry, and its the fact that there are fewer and fewer kids coming into existence to take up this increasingly expensive hobby. The Nintendo games library is built for children. I know Nintendo fans, like Disney fans, will frequently deny this? But they are wrong. Nintendo was a toy company that was catapulted to a billion dollar company by making a popular electronic toy that was popular amongst children of the American suburbs. Virtually an entire generation was profoundly affected by Nintendo. However, this same generation - the Millennial generation - has not shown much of an interest in reproducing, and therefore they have failed to pass on the Nintendo hobby to future generations. And the families that did have kids? They aren’t from the demographic that grew up playing Nintendo…..they’re from less affluent families, more religious families, or they are the children of immigrants. Groups that ALL had children at a much higher rate than middle class of yesteryear…..but at the same time, didn’t have much experience with Nintendo. Or mainstream videogame in general. Thus, kids today, if they play with any videogames at all, they just play with the ipad. How can Nintendo survive? Especially as costs keep going higher and higher? That’s what this video is about.
