I sometimes like to go on Reddit in order to research content and I read the craziest stuff there. Your average redditor is young, educated, myopically obedient to certain intellectual authorities, and yet bizarrely entitled all at the same time. In other words, a lot Gen Z hangs out there. Now, Im a millennial, and we’re super annoying and entitled too, but just not as much and this gets me to wondering why? Why have subsequent generations become, increasingly, worse than past generations in terms of motivation, ambition, work ethic, morals, decency, etc. And when I think about the differences between past generations, and the more current generations…. I can’t help but notice the role that videogame has played. The people that came before videogames existed were almost single minded in their focus on one of a few basic motivators: procreation, money for procreation, status for procreation, and failing all that…..self-inebriation. After videogames became popular with kid in the late 70s and early 80s, you started to see that drive sort of slow down a little bit. After videogames became big mainstream entertainment in the mid and late 90s, you started to see that drive slow down a lot. After about 2010, the drive - in young people - looked like it was virtually dead. Have improvements in videogames, as they’ve increased over time, contributed to the de-motivation of Gen Z, and Gen alpha? Obviously, reality is more complex than a singe possible variable, but join me as I think out loud and wonder about the unthinkable: could videogames actually by bad for society?
