In this video we take a look at what you as an athlete and you as a coach can do to get an athlete to really improve. I use Jai, one of the triple jumpers in the group as the exemplar. He started training two and a bit years ago and despite Covid breaks he's started to become a pretty decent jumper! We look at how you should work closely with the athlete and focus on their strengths. It can be all too easy to train these out or dent them. If you follow the process and are analytical, take time and are realistic then improvements will come. --------------------------------------- To become a channel member and gain access to exclusive content at Coach-Athlete or simply support the channel as a channel supporter level click here: / @johnshepherdtrackcoach -------------------------------------- VIDEO TIMELINE 0.00min Intro 0.21sec Context Focus on Jai - triple jumper 0.30min Look at the Athlete's Specific Qualities What we need to work on and what we need to leave alone Every athlete will have innate qualities Jai is in possession of great reactivity and leg stiffness He's a very short-term anaerobic athlete This is not a problem - you train what you have in front of you to maximise adaptation You don't have to have super fitness to be a great triple jumper - you need to have specific fitness and robustness Build on strengths 2.15min What we did and what we are focussing on We used/use a lot of drills to clean up Jai's running and triple jumping, to literally get him going in the right direction. Track & field training is really about repetition - but it has to be the right repetition Over the years we have kept doing similar things and over the years the improvements have come 3.15min Everyone is not going to progress at the same speed If you do the right things you can expect positive change 3.45min Jai v1.0 to Jai 2.0 You can see a significant improvement in his technical ability Key has been understanding on the part of Jai 4.18min Confidence How this applies to the hop If you get this right then the subsequent phases will be optimised 4.40min Find an elite role model Find an athlete who has a similar technical model Ref to Jai and single arm elite triple jumpers ... Khristo Mharov was our reference point It's all about working out how you can develop the athlete year by year by year 6.04min Where does strength fit in to all of this? Power production does not necessarily depend upon the size of the muscle Using weights to improve Jai could potentially be a blind alley Weight training is important we do do it - triphasic, complex/contrast, potentiating Jai's natural reactiveness could actually be dented by doing weights There are other ways to build robustness See drills as a great way to condition 8.05min Sprinting technique How you move your hips to really move forwards 8.44sec Plans for the Future Develop more power and the ability to hold onto the phases Lengthen the hop Reduce and improve step exit Thoughts on triple jump arm action 9.41min Jump phase Have really only just started to address this Looking to employ a double arm action into the jump 11.02 Reiteration of sticking to the fundamentals & summation Always dial back to thinking what do I need to do to really improve ----------------------------------------- Affiliate Links GREAT READS! 101 Youth Athletics Drills by Me!!! https://amzn.to/3PK5iQo Triple Jump TrailBlazers Book By Benns & Harvey https://amzn.to/3LxgPjg The Horizontal Jumps: Planning for Long Term Development: Volume 1 Paperback By Nick Newman https://amzn.to/3EMETuV Great Kit Speed Bands https://amzn.to/3EMA5FR -----------------------------------------
