A 55 person-strong team of military medics, first responders and air force personnel were sent to help assist Myanmar in the aftermath of a powerful earthquake, Thailand’s defence minister said on Sunday (March 30), in response to an aid request from Myanmar’s junta leader. “We quickly reacted and are ready to go in and provide help after learning of the request”, said Thai Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who attended a briefing with the team before sending them off at a military base in Thailand. At least 1,600 people have been killed and 3,400 injured by Friday's 7.7-magnitude quake, one of Myanmar's strongest in a century, its military government said. India, China and Thailand are among the neighbouring countries that have sent relief materials and teams, joining aid and personnel from Malaysia, Singapore and Russia. Thailand will be sending more personnel to assist Myanmar in the coming days, said Wechayachai. A Russian rescue team arrived in Naypyidaw, the capital of earthquake-hit Myanmar, on Sunday (March 30), according to the Russian Ministry of Emergencies. The team brought with them a mobile hospital and will head to hard-hit Mandalay near the epicentre of the quake, the ministry said. Foreign rescue teams began flying into Myanmar on Saturday (March 29) to aid in the search for survivors of Friday's (March 28) earthquake that has killed more than 1,600 people in the impoverished Southeast Asian nation crippling critical infrastructure amid a grinding civil war. The deadliest natural disaster to hit Myanmar in years damaged critical infrastructure, including an airport, highways and bridges, slowing humanitarian operations, according to the United Nations. #myanmar #unitednations #disaster #airport #live [Source: RUSSIAN EMERGENCIES MINISTRY VIA REUTERS] [Source: TPBS VIA REUTERS] Join ANI's YouTube membership to get access to perks: / @aninewsindia Subscribe now and press the bell icon 🔔 to get new video updates: https://bit.ly/2UV4ygi -------------------------------------- ANI is South Asia's leading Multimedia News Agency providing content for every information platform, including TV, Internet, broadband, newspapers, and mobiles.
