DMEW WEEK 2025 Series Selected Work of Call for Scores II — Composer Jia Chai 柴佳 talks about "Let the Spring Breeze Enter II" Video was recorded by the composer. July 31, 2025 This piece was inspired by a scene the poem is described : flowers falling down by the wind in spring. Plants seem aroused by the first wind in spring to indicate the new year’s coming. Based on this vivid image, I created different types of air or noise sound to imitate the sound of wind. This piece was composed for the solo Dizi player and electronics. The alto and tenor Dizi were adopted for this piece, while the work uses both fixed and live electronics. Dizi has the similar extraordinary ability of sounding intimate and distant. But at the same time, it can be hold and powerful. So Dizi in this piece is both intimately lyrical and vigorously virtuosic, with the developing dramaturgy ranging form the quietest contemplative moment to the most extreme outburst of emotion. The musical shape is relatively free, mapping the contours of our emotions with are often much more strongly and overtly displayed. The electronics sometimes as an accompany, sometimes becomes another part, helping to create a spatial and multi-layered effect. This work represents composer’s attempt to explore the expressive potential of the Dizi as an instrument with an enormous range of dynamics and timbres. In order to enhance its expressivity, composer have introduced in this piece some special ways of playing the instruments (eg. the elements of breath and noise), manifold multiphonics, and changes in articulations and registers, creating a kind of polyphonic and multi-layered effect. This work is not only a description of nature, but also uses compositional techniques such as contrast in sound intensity to depict the silent sadness and desolate mood of Su Shi's departure from his hometown. ——Jia Chai
