Mingjie Bi: Schismogenesis, for Pipa, Liuqin, Zhongruan, Morin Khuur and Electronics In this work, the instrument is placed within a state of contradiction. It delves into two fundamentally opposing material behaviors: one is plucking—a fleeting, inevitably vanishing impulse; the other is bowing—a forced prolongation and disciplining of physical decay. At the core of the piece lies the ongoing resistance and negotiation between these two material logics as they transform, thereby destabilizing their own established physical identities. Electronic music, as an active mediator, intervenes by capturing the ruptures and distortions generated by this confrontation, feeding them back as new input. This process compels the performer’s intentions and the material’s resistance to renegotiate their boundaries within an ever-intensifying cycle. Within this generative conflict, music emerges as an event driven and sustained by its internal contradictions. What is presented is the ceaseless process of material self-dissolution and reconstruction—a violent cycle of becoming. Ultimately, the work reveals an acoustic reality that transcends mere “outcomes”: sound itself is the trace left by antagonistic material behaviors. --------Mingjie Bi Composer Mingjie Bi Mingjie Bi (b. 2006) is a Chinese composer who employs intricate timbral textures as a medium to probe the intersections of social ritual and collective memory.
