Jalen is a Houston-based vibraphonist who has toured and performed with musicians such as Ulysses Owens and Jeremy Pelt. Jalen’s quartet has performed at Jazz Showcase in Chicago, Cezanne Jazz Club in Houston, Timucua Arts in Orlando, and Good Times Jazz Club in Savannah, Georgia. Baker is a strong, authentic voice in jazz vibraphone, building on Stefon Harris, Warren Wolf, and Joe Locke’s legacies while twisting the instrument’s idiosyncrasies to fit his burgeoning musical personality. His 2021 debut album, “This Is Me, This Is Us” (produced by mentor Ulysses Owens Jr., and praised for the “faultless execution” by Jazz Journal) wove themes of spirituality, trauma, and political action into a cohesive, tightly wrapped whole.
