B-17G Flying Fortress & P-47D Thunderbolt - Sywell Airshow 2024

The only Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress currently flying in Europe, B17 Preservations B-17G 'Sally B', displaying on Saturday of the Sywell Airshow 2024, supported by Fighter Aviation Engineering's Republic P-47D Thunderbolt, named 'Nellie B'. The B-17 was flown by Peter Kuypers and Daryl Taplin, while Cameron Rolph-Smith flew the P-47. Built as a Boeing B-17G-105-VE c/n 8693, 'Sally B' was one of the last B-17s to be constructed by the Lockheed-Vega plant at Burbank, California. Accepted by the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) as 44-85784 on 19th June 1945 it was too late to see war service, was flown to Nashville, converted for training purposes and re-designated a TB-17G. It was based at Wright Field (now Wright-Patterson AFB), Ohio from November 1945. In the care of 2750th Air Base Group (ABG), it was chosen for research use and became an EB-17G. It was used in various research roles, including the addition of a man-carrying pod on the starboard wingtip and fitted with an infra-red tracking device in place of the Perspex nose. In 1954 it was returned to standard configuration, less armaments, at Hill AFB in Utah. In France the Institut Geographic National (IGN) was using B-17s for survey and mapping work, and 'Sally B' arrived in November 1954 with French registration F-BGSR. At the start of the 1970s the cost of operating the B-17s became prohibitive and spares were in short supply, so the IGN replaced them with other aircraft. Businessman and pilot, Ted White brought F-BGSR to Britain via Biggin Hill to the Imperial War Museum Duxford, as N17TE, in March 1975, to begin a new life as 'Sally B' and made its debut at the 1975 Biggin Hill Air Fair. A permanent operating base was set up at Duxford. Kept in flying condition by volunteers from the newly formed Duxford Aviation Society, the Fortress was painted in the colours of the 457th Bomb Group, USAAF 8th Air Force, based at Glatton during the Second World War, but retained her original serial number 485784. Fighter Aviation Engineering's Republic P-47D Thunderbolt, 'Nellie B', G-THUN, was built in 1945 at Republic’s Evansville factory, Indiana, as serial No. 45-49192. It served with the United States Air Force (USAF) Air Training Command during the last few months of the War. It was later stored at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma with the Air Material Command. It was restored to full operational status at Hensley Field, Texas in 1952, after the Rio Pact had been signed by the USA, and was assigned to the Military Assistance Program. In 1953 it was part of a group of P47’s which went to the Peruvian Air Force. It was allocated Peruvian Air Force serial number 119 and served in Peru until 1967, as a front line fighter and then as a fighter trainer. 119 and five other Thunderbolts were stored in the open at the Piura Air Base until 1969, when Ed Jurist was able to recover them to the USA. Each aircraft was given a new FAA registration, this machine being N47DD. By February 1974 all six were airworthy and being operated by the Confederate Air Force (CAF) from Harlingen. In April 1975, Ed Jurist sold all of his aircraft to David Tallichet and the collection was split up with the formation of Tallichet's 'Yesterdays Air Force' (YAF), with 'wings' set up around the USA. N47DD went to the Kansas Wing, YAF at Forbes Field, Topeka in February 1977. In January 1980, it was sold to B-52 pilot, Robin Collard, in Texas. It left Kansas on the 8th February 1980 bound for Del Rio, Texas, although it made a stop-over in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that night. The following morning, the engine failed on take off, and the ferry pilot had to force land away from the runway, suffering minor injuries. The Thunderbolt was badly damaged. In June 1980 the complete project was sold to Jon Ward and shipped to Truckee-Tahoe airport, Nevada. Four years later, the project was sold to Jim Kirby, who in turn sold it to The Fighter Collection at Duxford, UK in late 1984. A second project fuselage and parts of N47DD were also sold to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, for completion of a static P-47D airframe that's now located in the American Air Museum at Duxford. N47DD was sent to Fighter Rebuilders in Chino, California. In August 1985 it flew again with an overhauled P&W 2800 engine. Wearing the scheme of 'No Guts, No Glory', it was shipped to the UK in October and arrived at The Fighter Collection, Duxford on 22nd of January 1986, where it stayed until sold to Claire Aviation Inc, going back to the USA on 01/3/2007. In 2018 it was sold to Fighter Aviation Engineering and returned to the UK. It now wears the markings of 'Nellie B', the aircraft of Lt. Col. James K. Johnson, Commanding Officer of the 48th Fighter Wing, while based in Belgium and Germany between October 1944 and June 1945 and assigned to the 492nd Fighter Squadron (The Mad Hatters).
