(2 Jun 1999) French/Nat French President Jacques Chirac has applauded the peace plan agreed upon by Russian and European Union and American envoys. He called it an important step toward a diplomatic breakthrough in the Kosovo conflict. The red carpet had been rolled out at the Elysee Palace for Jordan's King Abdullah. He arrived in Paris on Wednesday for talks with President Jacques Chirac. Chirac used the occasion to comment about the peace plan agreed by Russian and Western envoys. The French president said the plan paved the way for progress towards a diplomatic solution to the Kosovo conflict. SOUNDBITE: (French) "An hour or two ago, I believe an agreement came about between the Russian, European and American sides over a position to do with the political situation in Kosovo. As a result of the agreement, Mr Ahtisaari (Finnish President) and Mr Chernomyrdin (Russia's envoy to the Balkans) have now left for Belgrade. Without doubt the agreement opens the door for an important chance to seal a political agreement for Kosovo. I can't quite see how Serb authorities could refuse a solution which has been requested by the whole of the international community." SUPER CAPTION: Jacques Chirac, French President Russia's Balkans envoy Viktor Chernomyrdin and the E-U envoy - Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari - have now arrived in Belgrade to present the plan to Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic for talks in Belgrade. The envoys' mission is seen as a last minute attempt to see whether diplomacy can bring about an end to NATO's air campaign against Yugoslavia. Before leaving Bonn, Chernomyrdin was optimistic the plan could end the conflict.
