It took 468 years. Independence is not about a country with borders, it's about people's identity and culture. There is a tremendous difference between living in a place and belonging to that place. This video is to explain of how Jamaica became a country. From a Jamaican history of Maroons to the history of Jamaican politics - the road to gain independence was long and difficult. When we talk about Jamaica Independence Day History, the picture presented by traditional historians is of a colony united under the British rule, moving gradually into 1940s towards self-governing and finally to Independence. In reality, however, the division and separation were the key words, because there were no collective memories, no common language, no common culture, no sense of a community for people who had shared the same soil for years. That is why the events that happened from the end of 1920s can be viewed as nothing short of a miracle. = REFERENCES = This video was written, edited and published by Irina Bruce, based on the materials gathered from the following: The National Library of Jamaica The Jamaica Information Service The Jamaica Library Service The National Gallery of Jamaica The Jamaica National Heritage Trust The Gleaner Company The University of West Indies, Mona, Library Books: "The Story of the Jamaican People" by Philip Sherlock and Hazel Bennett, 1998 "The Jamaican, 56 Years of Independence", The Jamaican Magazine Collector's Edition, 2018.
