Giving a speech in Japanese was one of the most nerve-wracking things I’ve done. In this video I share my Japanese learning journey, my fear of public speaking, and what it really felt like standing in front of native speakers and opening my mouth. For years, I mostly listened. I studied, I understood, but I avoided speaking because I was scared of getting it wrong. This week, I pushed myself far outside my comfort zone and gave a full speech in Japanese to a community group here in Japan. I talk honestly about: • Why speaking Japanese feels more exposing than listening • The fear of making mistakes in front of native speakers • How I prepared for the speech • What actually helped me get through it • And what happened after it was over If you’re learning Japanese, living in Japan, or struggling with public speaking anxiety, I hope this gives you a little encouragement to take that uncomfortable step. You don’t have to feel ready. You just have to start.
