A Family Legacy: Turning 1951 Flooring into Custom Pens

Welcome to the shop! In this video, I’m working on a project that is as much about family as it is about woodworking. A customer brought me original wood flooring from her grandmother’s home, built in 1951, with a special request: to transform that history into a series of pens for herself and her family. It’s an honor to take a material that people have walked on for over 70 years and turn it into something they can hold in their hands to write the next chapter of their family story. The Build Process I’ve condensed this video to focus on the turning and finishing. Behind the scenes, I spent time planing and laminating the original flooring planks to ensure structural integrity before cutting them into the pen blanks you see on the lathe. Finishing Specs: Sanding: Stepped through 150 grit up to 800 grit. Polish 1: A single coat of EEE-Ultra Shine. Polish 2: A single coat of Shellawax Cream. Pro-Tip: While some turners prefer building up multiple layers of friction polish, I find that a single, high-quality application of each provides the best feel for the wood. While I do occasionally add extra coats for specific pieces, for the vast majority of my work, including these family heirlooms, one coat provides a durable, beautiful finish.
