The Old Wagon Trail Into Kirkland IL

The old wagon trail and early horseless carriage road into Kirkland IL from the east before IL Rt 72 was built IN 1931. Parts of what became Rt 72 existed in broken sections but did not go into Kirkland because of the low wetland area, often referred to as "The Slew" by old timers. In any case, we turn south onto the trail which after a short distance turns west and eventually crosses 1st St (aka Pearl St) where the Maple Cemetery is. At that point this road meets up with Hortense Dr and continues west to Malta Rd. In the old days Hortense Dr also continued west and met up with Quarry Rd but that's another story. Ref: MVI 1553
