A Complete Outdoor Transformation for Fox Wood Special School | Inclusive Play Case Study

Fox Wood Special School is widely recognised for its commitment to providing a nurturing, supportive, and inclusive environment for children with a wide range of complex needs. Based in Warrington, the school is continually striving to elevate its outdoor spaces to better support sensory development, physical confidence, independence, and imaginative play. To help the school realise their vision for a fully inclusive, accessible and inspiring outdoor environment, Pentagon Play were invited to redevelop several key external areas across the site. The goal was to create outdoor spaces that supported every child’s unique needs while offering enriching opportunities for active play, communication, sensory exploration and creative expression. Working closely with the team at Fox Wood, our consultant Jon began by understanding the school’s priorities, from improving accessibility routes and upgrading surfaces, to creating meaningful zones for movement, calm, social interaction and skill development. One of the main challenges was designing a space that would not only support children with a diverse range of needs but also remain robust, low-maintenance, and practical for staff to use every day. Ensuring each element offered both functional and therapeutic value was key to shaping an environment that could support learning, regulation and wellbeing. With careful planning and a child-centred approach, we transformed the outdoor areas into vibrant, fully inclusive zones featuring high-quality surfacing, active play opportunities, sensory pathways and engaging creative spaces.
