We’ll look at Orientalism, gender, queerness, the “foreign vs. local” double standard, and why male belly dancers face unique risks. I also compare parallel cases like India’s devadasi and Côte d’Ivoire’s Mapouka to show how colonial rule reshaped dance across the Global South.
