Van Life in Baja California Sur: Where the Magic Truly Begins (and the Challenges, too!)

In this episode of our Baja van life journey, we continue traveling south from San Ignacio to Mulegé, Bahía de Concepción, Loreto, and La Paz — and this stretch of Baja completely blew us away. From camping on some of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever seen, to trying incredible local food and diving deeper into Mexican culture, this part of the trip reminded us why we chose van life in the first place. The turquoise water of Bahía de Concepción, peaceful beach camps, and charming coastal towns made this portion of the journey unforgettable. But van life isn’t always smooth sailing… and we wanted to share the full, honest experience of life on the road. Along the way, the rough and bumpy Baja roads caused major issues with our rear storage box. The stress and weight caused it to sag so badly that we genuinely thought we might lose our bumper, forcing us to make the tough decision to remove it entirely. We also faced a scary situation with our senior Golden Retriever, Hoonah, who developed a severely swollen ear while traveling. This meant multiple vet visits while navigating a foreign country, which added a lot of stress and uncertainty to the trip. Thankfully, with the help of local veterinarians, we were able to get her the care she needed and keep our journey going. Van life often looks like endless beach sunsets and dream campsites — and sometimes it truly is — but there are always unexpected challenges behind the scenes. In this video, we wanted to show both the magic and the reality of traveling full-time on the road.
