Raphael Tyson, Emmanuel Akorli, Dave Ketchum, and James Kofi Annan discuss their leadership roles and social impact in Ghana. Tyson, founder of Kingsbridge Microfinance Limited, first talks about his organization and the importance of microfinance in Ghana. Kingsbridge specializes in providing access to credit for small businesses and has grown from serving a client base of five in 2005 to serving almost 1,500 in 2012. Tyson explains that his organization helps to integrate Ghanaian citizens into the global economy.Next, Akorli, Ghana Field Representative for Mission Resource International (MRI), describes MRIÍs primary objectives and outlines some of the challenges faced when mentoring small businesses. As a nonprofit organization, MRI funds business ventures with interest free loans and impacts communities by helping individuals become self-sustaining. Akorli explains that cultural norms in Ghana are often an impediment to business growth, so MRI educates individuals on the need to maintain financial records and develop business plans. Ketchum, Director of MRI, also touches on the significance of mentorship and collaboration to business success.James Kofi Annan discusses his organization, Challenging Heights, and stresses the importance of mobilizing community support in order to implement social change. Challenging Heights seeks to help rescue and prevent children from enslavement in Ghana. Annan views education as a crucial aspect of the organizationÍs mission as it ensures children understand their basic rights. Since its creation, Challenging Heights has helped to change the status quo Ghana. Annan cites increased school enrollment rates and a focus on saving resources as two main changes in his community in Ghana.Following the presentations, the panel answers questions from the audience about their organizations and the country of Ghana.
