As a survivor of child slavery, James Kofi Annan discusses his personal story of perseverance and his ongoing work to prevent child trafficking in Ghana as the Executive Director of Challenging Heights. First, Jessie Emelander, an employee of the Hovde Foundation, describes the foundation's partnership with Challenging Heights. She provides an overview of child trafficking in Ghana and talks about the rehabilitation facility built for Challenging Heights to house rescued children. Next, Annan gives details about his life as a child slave. At the age of six, he was sold into slavery and worked 16 hour days fishing and living under the constant threat of physical abuse. After seven years, Annan successfully escaped and was forced to provide for himself at the age of thirteen. He understood that education was the only preventative measure to becoming enslaved again and persevered to finish high school, attend college, and accept a job with Barclays Bank.Having experiences as a slave and a free man, Annan recognized his unique perspective to help enslaved children in Ghana. He founded Challenging Heights, an organization that rescues child slaves and works to prevent children from being trafficked. Education is an essential component of both the rehabilitation process and the preventative program. Annan discusses the importance of running his organization with a business mentality in order to ensure its sustainability and long-term success. He cites an example of a new computer lab as an opportunity to further the mission of the organization while also securing funds for its existence. Following his presentation, Annan fields questions from the audience on a variety of topics including his escape from slavery, the nature of rescue missions, and the education of citizens on the issue of trafficking.
