Discover the history and the rugged isolated beauty of Cape Otway Lightstation. Known as the 'Beacon of Hope' and Australia's most significant lighthouse https://www.lightstation.com/ Beacon of Hope. Built in 1848, Cape Otway Lighthouse is the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia. It was the second lighthouse to be built by the New South Wales Colonial Government. The first was in Sydney, the second was here which for European colonials was an isolated, very remote, windswept place. For ships arriving out of the southern ocean going to Geelong, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, Cape Otway was to be their first landfall light. When first lit, ships' Captains stated that they could see the light 30 miles away. For some ships arriving in the 1800's, they could have been at sea for over 100 days. The light was coined by mariners, 'The Beacon of Hope'. Until the end of the 1800's, for nine out of ten immigrants, this light was their first sight of Australia. This was particularly true for those arriving by sailing ship. In 1994 the lighthouse was replaced by the smaller light beacon as the Cape Otway light.
