THE SPIRITUAL CITY OF INDIA - VARANASI Hello friends! Today, I’m taking you on a journey to a city that is known as the city of salvation — Varanasi, also called Banaras and Kashi. Here stands one of the most ancient and revered temples in India — the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple. In this vlog, we’ll explore the temple’s history, its construction and restoration, the famous ghats nearby, iconic food spots, shopping areas, and much more. Varanasi is considered one of the oldest living cities in the world. It is believed that this city was founded by Lord Shiva himself. Located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi sits on the banks of the sacred Ganges River. Every single day, thousands of devotees arrive — some in search of spiritual liberation, others to immerse themselves in its deep-rooted faith, culture, and music. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas — the most sacred abodes of Shiva. The temple is also known as "Vishwanath", meaning "Lord of the Universe". It was originally built in the 11th century, but destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout history. The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb demolished the temple and built the Gyanvapi Mosque in its place. Later in 1777, the current temple was reconstructed by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. After that, Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab donated the gold plating on the temple’s spire, which still shines today. The present-day Kashi Vishwanath Temple is a grand, well-organized complex, thanks to the recently built Kashi Vishwanath Corridor. This massive project was initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and included: A wide, open path connecting the temple directly to the Ganga Ghats Modern facilities for visitors and pilgrims A divine and majestic new complex layout This corridor includes: The main temple, A museum, Yagyashala (ritual hall), Resting and refreshment zones for devotees 🔹 Temple Timings: Open daily from 4 AM to 11 PM Mangala Aarti: 4–5 AM Shringar Aarti: 7–8 PM Shayan Aarti: 10:30 PM 🔹 Time required for Darshan (visit): On regular days: 30 minutes to 1 hour During festivals or the holy month of Shravan: 2–4 hours or more 🔹 The sacred Shiva Lingam resides in a small sanctum, adorned with silver and gold. Just beside the temple is the Gyanvapi Mosque, built by Aurangzeb. A wall separates the temple and the mosque — both hold deep religious and historical importance, and continue to be the focus of many ongoing cultural and legal discussions. 🕰️ Best Time to Visit Varanasi: October to March — pleasant weather Mahashivratri, Kartik Purnima, and the month of Shravan see special celebrations and huge gatherings 🛶 The Famous Ghats of Varanasi (There are 84 in total!): Assi Ghat – peaceful vibes, popular for yoga and music Dashashwamedh Ghat – home to the famous Ganga Aarti, where thousands gather every evening Manikarnika Ghat – the sacred cremation ghat, believed to grant moksha (liberation) A boat ride on the Ganges at sunrise is an absolute must — an experience you’ll cherish forever. 🍲 Banaras is also a city of flavors!
