Exploring Poland on the waterways of Europe: Starting from Hel Peninsula, the journey travels the Baltic Sea down to the Hanseatic city of Gdańsk, then follows the Vistula and the Elbląg Canal to the Masurian Lake District. The Hel peninsula, with its white sandy beaches and deep green pine forests, is home to a research institute studying life in the Baltic Sea - and a seal breeding station. Across the bay lies the Hanseatic city of Gdansk. We sail past shipyards and old office buildings, follow the Vistula and the Oberland Canal to the Rollberge Mountains, where ships are transported overland by rail – historic engineering par excellence. At the university in Olstyn, the capital of Masuria, Renata Augustyniak successfully researches new methods of reviving contaminated lakes. The journey continues east and reaches the clearest river in the country, the Krutynia. Here lies a rehab station for storks - the heraldic animal of the country. With ranger and nature photographer Waldemar Bzura we discover the the rich wildlife of Masuria and the floating islands of Zakret nature reserve – beautiful in the morning fog. On the shores Lake Beldany, Moussa Bah, a veterinarian from Mali, breeds the wild horse "Konik" – on behalf of the Polish Academy of Sciences. His colleague, animal caretaker Marlena Boroń, is in charge of the beaver rearing of the station. With the sailboat, the journey continues via Mikolaiky to the Masurian channel. A few kilometers before the Russian border, we meet angler Marta Gottwald, world champion in her discipline, during her training. The tour ends at a huge lock from Nazi times - today converted into an adventurous climbing facility for vertigo-free recreational athletes. ------- Chapters ▷ 00:00 - Intro ▷ 01:36 - Hel Peninsula ▷ 06:07 - Gdańsk ▷ 09:47 - Vistula ▷ 10:29 - Szkarpawa ▷ 11:01 - Elbląg Canal ▷ 13:26 - Masurian Lake District ▷ 17:40 - Krutynia, Krutyn ▷ 32:51 - Saint Nicholas ▷ 34:20 - Giżycko ▷ 36:40 - Węgorzewo, Lake Mamry ▷ 37:24 - Masuria ▷ 42:42 - Credits #documentary #travel #vistula #poland #masurianlakes #gdansk #europe #river #waterwaysofeurope ------- Watch all episodes in our playlist: https://bit.ly/europes_waterways Subscribe to wocomoTRAVEL: https://goo.gl/tIk2Qc Follow us on Facebook: / wocomo ------- Venturing upstream on Europe's waterways, the series discovers five regions of the continent from an unknown perspective and visits people who live from, on and with water. Rivers, canals, lake regions: they have shaped Europe’s cultures for centuries – they are a place to live, transport arteries and sources of energy. Five journeys on watercourses broad and narrow lead to Italy, Germany, France, Poland, Holland and Belgium. Along the way: new projects for the future of water in Europe.
