Many musicians feel the pull of age — too young to be taken seriously, or too old to start something new. The music industry and society often send mixed messages about what’s “allowed,” and that pressure can leave us feeling stuck. In today’s video I share my own story and some thoughts on age in music — whether you’re a younger musician with raw enthusiasm, or an older beginner wondering if it’s “too late.” Together we’ll look at why the music itself doesn’t care how old you are, and how to keep creating at any stage of life. You’ll also get a short guided meditation exercise at the end to release age-related doubts and settle into playing for the joy of the music itself. ⏱️ Timestamps 00:00 Introduction: gravity, Radiohead, and age in music 01:14 My story: starting a music degree at 28 02:52 Why society fetishises youth in music 04:36 Older beginners and why music is different from other art forms 05:43 Image, gender, and age in the music industry 06:44 The main idea: the music doesn’t care how old you are 07:46 What young musicians can do with enthusiasm and energy 08:22 Final invitation: let go of age pressure and just play 08:36 Relaxation exercise for calm practice 🕸️ Watch all the “Gravity” videos here: • A week of Gravity 🎶 About this channel I’m Erica Bramham — a professional musician, teacher, and composer.
