Participatory Rural Appraisal: Tools for Rapid Community Engagement in program Design and Evaluation

This PD session was presented on January 15, 2021 by Carmen Benson-Byce & Dr. Kim Dooley, Texas A&M University. Session Description: Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) techniques empower local communities as active participants in program design and assessment (Toness, 2011). Drawing from experience implementing PRA techniques with communities in Afghanistan, Timor-Leste, and Myanmar, we see PRA as an essential technique for practitioners, educators, and students in agricultural extension and international development (Dooley, Dobbins & Edgar, 2018).Through this hands-on learning session, participants will actively practice implementing three to four PRA tools for agricultural assessments including transect walks, seasonal calendars, and empowerment decision matrices. Participants will leave with new tools in their development tool belt and a renewed enthusiasm for community engagement.
