Strategies for Successful Open-Ended Discussion: How a Focus on Process Can Improve the Classroom

with Nancy Roach, Part-Time Assistant Professor, Parsons First Year In this short talk Nancy shares strategies for creating an environment where students can engage in successful open-ended discussions. Using techniques of freewriting, brainstorming and whip-arounds to bring all student voices into the room, she begins from the premise that asking open ended questions about class processes and abstract concepts can help build the community, confidence and trust necessary for students to engage in meaningful discussions. The creation of these shared understandings can improve text-based discussions as well, as students learn to pay close attention to the assumptions embedded in the language we use to communicate with one another.
