Saint Joseph's Day in Sicily or Festa di Sant Giuseppe is an important Sicilian festival on March 19th. In the Middle Ages during a drought the people of Sicily prayed for an intercession to Saint Joseph and promised a feast in his name if he would put an end to the famine. Rain came and one of the first crops to grow were fava beans, which today continue to be an important part of the celebration.
