The Rawsthorne Elegy for Guitar and the Walton Bagatelles were performed at the 28th Cheltenham Festival in 1973 and broadcast by the BBC. Spoken Introduction 00:04 Rawsthorne: Elegy 01:24 Spoken Introduction 09:04 Walton: Bagatelle No. 1 10:21 Walton: Bagatelle No. 2 13:57 Walton: Bagatelle No. 3 17:12 Walton: Bagatelle No. 4 19:14 Walton: Bagatelle No. 5 21:24 Spoken Conclusion 24:03 Alan Rawsthorne's Elegy for Guitar was written in 1971, the last year of his life. Rawsthorne didn't quite finish the piece, which was left for Bream to complete, based on sketches by the composer. The Walton Bagatelles were also written in 1971. This broadcast performance in 1973 preceded his 2 commercial recordings, the first from later that year in 1973 and the second dating from 1984. One very notable aspect about this performance occurred in the slow and tranquil 4th Bagatelle. Bream's interpretation of this piece is radically different from either of his 2 commercial recordings, including dramatic changes in tempo and the use of tremolando.
