Rabbanit Dalia Davis reflects on this week's Torah portion of Parshat Bo. We see the final three plagues in Egypt, culminating with the death of the firstborn and the beginning of the actual exodus from Egypt. R' Dalia notices the difficult mindset the Israelites must be in just before they are freed. After centuries of slavery, Moses comes to tell them God sent him to bring them to freedom. Yet, plague after plague, the Israelites go through an emotional rollercoaster --- will Pharoah let them go? or will he refuse once again? The emotional turmoil makes the Israelites feel like they will never be un-stuck from this servitude. Freedom feels impossible. Especially when we see this text after the 9th plague of darkness. Pharaoh digs in his heels and tells Moses -- You will never get out of this place. And Moses, actually agrees! Observing this, the Israelites must have felt complete and utter despair!!! But WE, as the readers of the text, know that freedom and the exodus is only a few verses away! Pharaoh said to him, “Be gone from me! Take care not to see me again, for the moment you look upon my face you shall die.” And Moses replied, “You have spoken rightly. I shall not see your face again!” Exodus 10:28-29 Freedom from your stuck-ness may be just a few verses away. www.svivah.org
