Allostasis Applications for Surgery: A new paradigm in surgery is presented by Raj Shah, MD MPH, shifting from an egocentric to an allocentric approach. Dr. Shah presents on the concepts of allostasis, the triple network model, and polyvagal theory, explaining how these could be applied to improve surgical practices and patient outcomes. He discusses preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative strategies including mindfulness, breathwork, and therapeutic presence to reduce anxiety and improve healing. The presentation highlights the importance of team dynamics, patient education, and personalized care in achieving better surgical results. Dr. Shah also shares ongoing research and pilot programs aimed at implementing these concepts in surgical settings. The conversation ends with a call for surgery to evolve beyond technical mastery to a more holistic approach that emphasizes regulation, connection, and shared humanity. This presentation is a final project for the medical school elective, The Neuroscience of Brain-Body Connections & Creativity, taught by Dr. Sung Lee, Dr. Jessica Del Pozo, and inspired by Dr. Peter Sterling---who coined the term allostasis, and who is present at this talk.
