Dr. Nandini Sharma presents how the current homeostatic model of ADHD lacks consistency and fails to account for environmental factors and developmental changes. She highlights two key studies that support the triple network model, which suggests that abnormal brain connectivity can impair attention and lead to ADHD symptoms. She emphasizes the importance of considering environmental influences, such as parental techniques and learning environments, in the development of ADHD. Dr Sharma touches on the need to reframe social norms and question whether current educational and professional environments are conducive to everyone's neurocognitive development. The group discusses Dr. Sharma’s presentation on brain networks and their development, exploring how environmental factors and interventions like yoga and breathwork can influence neural connections. The conversation concludes with discussions on applying these concepts in pediatric care, emphasizing the importance of meeting children where they are and tailoring education to their interests with comments from Dr. Orlando Acuna, Dr. Sunny Vansdadia, Dr. Raj Shah, Dr. Heather Held, and Dr. Javon Maceo Freeman. “What we practice, we become,” Dr. Sterling adds. Dr. Sung Lee adds to our brain-body understanding by explaining the protective/defensive nature of migraines from an allostatic lens from a key paper in the literature for this course. This presentation is a final project for the medical school elective, The Neuroscience of Brain-Body Connections & Creativity, taught by Dr. Sung Lee and clinical psychologist Dr. Jessica Del Pozo for The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix in The Bioethics and Medical Humanism Department. Allostasis Talks are inspired by Dr. Peter Sterling, who coined the scientific term allostasis with Dr. Joseph Eyer in the 1980s.
