#Kargil #Ladakh #ladakhtourism #VolunteeringInIndia Hunderman or Hundarmaan or Hundurmaan (originally called Hundermo, according to Stanzin Saldon writing for People's Archive of Rural India) is a border village located on the banks of Drass river just 10Kms from the main city of Kargil. Geographically situated in Baltistan region Hunderman came under the control of Pakistan in the partition of 1947. During the Indo-Pak war of 1971, the Indian Army acquired Hunderman post which it became a part of the Indian Nation. The total population of Hunderman is 216 and its located so close to the Line of Control that one can see the border as well as nearby Pakistani villages with bare eyes. The last war of 1971 saw families split up, some going away to Pakistan, others remaining in India. Being on the Line of Control between the two warring nations, life has not been easy for the residents here. Gradually, most moved to a higher ledge, distancing themselves from the proximity of the LoC making new residential blocks called Upper Hunderman and Lower Hunderman. Once a thriving spot on the legendary Silk Route the erstwhile village is abandoned now like a ghost town with silent and weathered houses. There is a beautiful museum here called Unlock Hunderman - Museum of Memories which was built in 2015 in joint collaboration between Roots Collective, Farside Collective and CEPT. A stepped cluster of daub-and-wattle houses, the Hunderman Brok settlement has an unusual architecture. The entire premise, mostly consisting of people’s homes and cattle sheds, was interconnected throughout, apparently for the convenience of not having to step out when it snowed during winter. The rooms had three built walls while the rocky mountain formed the fourth. From the outside, one cannot see steps or streets of any kind that provide access to the terraces.
