The Beethoven Sonata in F minor, op. 57 (“Appassionata”)

The “Appassionata Sonata” of Beethoven is, of his 32 piano sonatas, the 23rd one and the most powerful one he wrote up to the time. Laid out on a grand scale, it is also one of Beethoven’s most challenging sonatas technically for any performer. Written around 1803-05, It has the standard three movements. The first is the largest and has a dark, almost brooding quality, with almost violent contrasts of dynamics. The second is a theme-and-variations on a chorale-like theme. Four variations follow. The last movement begins without a break after two transition chords and is a hard-driving perpetual-motion movement which brings this Sonata to a very strong and dramatic conclusion.
