From 4-6 March 2024 the PILON Sexual and Gender Based Violence Working Group held an Implementation Workshop in Nadi, Fiji, for the Regional Guidelines for Prosecutors and Witness Support Officers to support Vulnerable Witnesses through the Prosecution of Sexual and Gender Based Violence Offences. Mercy Tamate is a State Prosecutor and the Prosecutor in Charge of the Family and Sexual Offences Unit at the Papua New Guinea Office of the Public Prosecutor. In her presentation, Mercy highlights the importance of considering the legal, cultural and operational contexts of a jurisdiction when seeking to adapt the Regional Guidelines. Mercy also explores a number of shared challenges to implementing the Regional Guidelines, including a lack of witness support officers and capacity, and offers methods to address these challenges. To view the Regional Guidelines and other supporting resources, please visit the SGBV digital library on the PILON website at pilonsec.org.
